ROGER EBERT / Brian Tallerico
An original musical comedy told in one unbroken shot that uses the true stories of its subjects to make what Francis Ford Coppola called ‘live cinema.’ Brother Verses Brother is about those nights we all have when everything seems a little heightened, when we argue a little more vehemently and love a little stronger, when memories of our childhood fuel visions of our future. It’s a sweet, smart movie that’s not only unlike anything I saw at SXSW this year, but anything I’ll see anywhere all year.

FILM STAGE / John Fink
A tiny miracle of a movie…. Ari Gold’s deeply personal Brother Verses Brother is a whimsical musical à la John Carney’s Once, taking place on city streets, in pubs, and around small apartments. Nuanced and natural… It beautifully pulls off its ambitions. I imagine André Bazin, who detested classical cutting in favor of realism, would have loved the experience. It’s one of the great discoveries from this year’s SXSW.

SCREEN ANARCHY / J Hurtado
A Live Cinema Musical With A Huge Heart… Blissfully introspective...does more to levitate the spirits of the viewer than a hundred Wickeds ever could. There is love, there is loss; betrayal, ennui, ecstasy, agony, and lots of petty bickering. It is tender and heartbreaking, a kind of genuine familial love that is rarely reflected on screen. What Brother Verses Brother manages to put on screen is nothing like any film I’ve seen in recent years, or perhaps ever. It is a real, true discovery of a talent and a form that I didn’t realize I was missing. Rarely do I feel privileged to have seen a film, but after watching Brother Verses Brother, I feel like I was privy to real lives, and I am honored.

AWARDS BUZZ / Abe Friedtanzer
Brother Verses Brother is a Wondrously Captivating Musical Family Odyssey… An extraordinary duo that spectacularly carries this film…. Fans of movies like Once will find plenty to love here. This is a fantastic example of how [live cinema] can be completely terrific, telling a simple story in an imaginative and deeply engaging manner, a celebration of music that doubles as a meditation on life and loss.

RT/MEDIUM / Jeanine Abraham
Brother Verses Brother is a Profound Vision of Love and Care. Brother Verses Brother makes you laugh, listen and touches the heart in all the best ways. Ari Gold’s direction is exceptional. The music, written by Ethan Gold, is simply beautiful, like a supporting cast member providing depth and texture to the narrative. Anyone who has lost a parent they cared for will understand this film's subtle beauty. The movie is entertaining and funny while simultaneously sharing a profound message that we often run from: how we care for our elders and each other in a lifetime that flies by like the blink of an eye..the beauty of this film shows hope, power, and even joy within the codependence that happens in families.

ELEMENTS OF MADNESS / Douglas Davidson
Brother Verses Brother is a life-affirming, soul-crushing, musical journey that reminds us how art can save our lives. Charmingly self-aware and frequently quixotic, yet never relenting in its quest for connection between the central players and the audience simultaneously, building toward a bittersweet climax that’s as life-affirmingly poignant as it is soul-crushing. These choices cultivate a cinematic environment that’s like a play, with the city of San Francisco in place of a traditional stage and far less controllable, requiring fluidity and flexibility from the cast and crew as they shoot. Brother Verses Brothers is itself a poem whose zenith brings forth incredible joy and terrible pain, the longing that each brother feels coming to the surface, enveloping the audience in their final song and all that it represents. [It is] poignant and powerful as it speaks of the briefness of human life and the importance of the connections made along the way.

REEL NEWS DAILY / Liz Whittmore
A wild and personal familial musical odyssey. The film is mind-blowing. It is a technical feat of magic, music, and movie-making… Ari and Ethan are dazzling as foils for each other. Ari is a freight train seeking love and approval, while Ethan is more somber and works through his grief and anxiety through song. I would watch them banter and create live on stage any day. Take my money. Deeply personal and ceaselessly intriguing, the film is a celebration of the unique chemistry and songwriting between two vastly different men AND an ode to their father and each other. Inject this entire soundtrack into my veins immediately. Brother Verses Brother is one giant smirk-inducing dopamine hit.”
